Grand plans are on the menu for an Alnwick pub, which is set to reopen as a pop-up-style restaurant before being transformed into a ‘smart-looking, upmarket’ steakhouse and tavern.
Chris Hume, who has a wealth of experience in the catering and hospitality trade, has taken over at the Market Tavern.
He believes the Fenkle Street venue has plenty of potential and is determined to turn it into one of the town’s premier social spots.
Plans are in place to reopen the pub this weekend as a pop-up restaurant serving a range of American-style burgers, ribs and wings.
This will be followed by a major refurbishment of the venue, including the dining room and kitchen, as well as an upgrade of the pub’s seven letting bedrooms.
Chris said: “I think the Tavern is a great location in a great town and I am approaching this venture in two stages.
“It will be opening in the short-term with a pop-up restaurant, serving things like burgers and ribs, which should be a lot of fun. We are looking to have a soft launch at some point this weekend.
“We have then got aspirations to carry out a full and major refurbishment to create a smart-looking and upmarket steakhouse, lodge and tavern.
“It is going to be really quite special and we hope to have this transformation in place before Christmas.
“If the pop-up-style restaurant is successful, we will keep this going in the long term, alongside the more formal steakhouse menu.”
Chris has already taken on staff and will be looking to recruit more once the refurbishment is complete.
The venture sees Chris make a return to his native Northumberland, having previously moved away from Alnmouth to build up three restaurant chains in Cheshire.
