Talent search goes on for summer celebration

MUSICIANS, bands, dancers and other talented folk are being rallied to join this summer’s Festival of Alnwick, in celebration of the Olympic Torch visit.

While sporting fixtures are rapidly filling up the week-long showcase, which runs between June 9 and 15, more entertainers are required to put on performances for the thousands of visitors expected to descend on the town.

A ceilidh is already planned for the Northumberland Hall, featuring the Simply Northumbrian band, on the Saturday evening, but there are plenty more slots and venues in the pipeline.

Dance teacher Emma Dunn, from Dansformation, has also come onboard to stage a variety of performances and workshops during the week.

Festival organiser Karen Larkin said: “What we’re looking for are local musicians, bands, dancers and performers to put on shows during the week, as this is all about community spirit and showing what great talent we have here in north Northumberland.

“As well as the ceilidh, we’ve been talking to Ray Thompson about his Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band putting on a jazz night in the Northumberland Hall on the Sunday, which will be a big attraction. What we’d really like to do is to stage a tea dance for the older members of the community, so we need a band which can provide the music.

“We’d also like as many schools as possible to get involved, so if they have choirs, dance groups or bands, we’d like to hear from them.”

Karen added: “While the sporting element is gaining a lot of momentum, we want to provide some great entertainment to run alongside it throughout the week.

“We want every group that meets in the area to use this opportunity to showcase their talents and make this a festival to remember.”

As well as the Northumberland Hall, a stage will be erected in the Market Place for the duration of the festival, while talks are progressing to open up other venues in town.
