Take your litter home

NORTHUMBERLAND Wildlife Trust is urging people to take their litter home with them, especially when visiting the coast.

It says 80 per cent of litter found in the sea is from land, 250 tonnes of litter is removed from the North Sea and plastic bags and balloons have devastating effects on marine life, which mistakes the bags for food. The bag either gets tangled in their stomach or blocks their gut, causing them to die a slow and painful death.

Duncan Hutt, head of land management, said: “I would urge members of the public to spare a thought for what’s living under the sea when they are hurling their rubbish into it.”
