Meanwhile, a reunion is taking place for girls who attended the Duchess’s Grammar School from 1969 to 1976.

The last nostalgic look around the current buildings takes place on Saturday, June 25.

The school will be open from 10am for those interested to gather for refreshments at the Howling Lane site, with a tour beginning at 11am.

The event is open to past students and anyone else who is interested in viewing the buildings, before the school moves to its new home on Taylor Drive.

If you would like to attend, contact the school to reserve a place as numbers for the tour are limited. Email [email protected] or call 01665 602166.

On the same day, the reunion is taking place in The Plough, Alnwick, for the girls who attended the grammar school.

A closed Facebook page was set up at the start of the year to try to generate interest in a reunion event and of the 50 or so girls who were in the year from 1969 to 1976, the organisers have managed to contact the majority, with 30 coming to the lunch.

Jennifer MacKenzie, who is involved in the event, said: “We are just amazed at the response with old girls coming from all over the country and as far afield as Dubai to be there, and others in Australia, New Zealand and Spain following us, although a lot still live and work locally or have family and friends in the area.

“We are also expecting our PE teacher to be there. The majority haven’t seen each other in four decades. We’re all looking forward to it and to catching up.”
