Take keys out and lock away vehicles

A police commander has urged people to remove keys and lock their vehicles after a spate of thefts in north Northumberland.

Through the Coquetdale community messaging scheme, Gordon Milward, Northumbria Police’s area commander for the county, has asked residents to be vigilant against thieves.

He said: “I am aware of how efficiently an agricultural business needs to run to make it viable, and it would be a policing ideal but may not be operationally effective for all machinery to be locked away when not in use.

“I do, however, strongly believe that there is one easy way to reconcile both demands, and that is to remove ignition keys from unattended motor vehicles and lock them. Insecure cars with keys left in are far too easy to steal and to dispose of as a bona fide sale. “

He added that in the last few weeks there have been three such thefts.
