A new manager has started work in charge of Alnwick’s market offering this week, hoping to attract more traders to the heart of the town.
Dawn Watts, who has taken over at Alnwick Markets, is also known as the face of Kenspeckle Fudge, the Lynemouth confectionery enterprise which she helped to launch.
Dawn succeeds Steve Ellaby, who, after two seasons as manager, leaves to pursue new career opportunities.
“I am ready for a new challenge and Alnwick Markets seems like the perfect opportunity,” she said.
“The Market Place is at the heart of the town, but we are not attracting the number of traders that such a prime location deserves.
“I look forward to getting to know other businesses in the town better, and to exploring about how we can draw more shoppers into the Market Place.”
Traders have welcomed Dawn’s appointment, not least because they know that she has first-hand experience of market trading – out in all hours and in all weathers.
Chairman of Alnwick Markets, Philip Angier said: “The feedback to the Neighbourhood Plan shows that local people care about our town centre and want to see us get the best from our Market Place. New initiatives this year, such as the Sunday Craft Market, seem to have struck the right note.
“We aim to do more, including seasonal family entertainment at our feature markets, Apple Day on October 31 and our Christmas Markets.”
Dawn is no stranger to social media and plans to use Alnwick Markets’ considerable following on Twitter to good effect.
Regular markets take place on Saturdays, from 9am to 4pm, and Thursdays from April to Christmas, from 9am to 4pm. Farmers’ markets take place on the last Friday of the month, between 9am and 2pm.
