For the first 15 years of the 20th century, the suffragettes battled with the authorities and society at large to make themselves heard. The selection of film being shown at Belford has been chosen from the BFI National Archive and shows how suffragettes were portrayed at the cinema while their battles raged on the streets.

BFI curator, Ros Cranston, is travelling from London for the screening and will be introducing the film and afterwards taking questions. There will be women in costume and the organisers would really appreciate it if filmgoers commemorated the cause by wearing ribbons or clothes in the suffragette colours of purple, white and green.

The screening is on Wednesday, March 7, at 7pm, in the Ferguson Hall. Entry is £4 on the door.
