Sue's craft to feature on TV

Sue Shaw makes intricate works of art from pork pies to rocking horses by needle felting.

She is one of the crafters who will be featured on BBC 4’s Make! Craft Britain which starts tonight.

Sue describes herself as ‘a lifelong compulsive crafter’ and has always dabbled in many creative activities. She has what she calls ‘itchy fingers’ syndrome and likes to try all sorts of crafts.

She first started needle felting in 2014 and has been hooked ever since.

The craft is a technique that uses a special barbed needle that is pushed into wool fibres which presses them down and blends them.

She has made some amazing creations. Since she started she has made more than 200 pieces of work including animals, old master portrait figures, scenes and food.

Pieces take between a day and two weeks to make and most of the fleece is sourced from Yorkshire and Northumberland.

But this isn’t Sue’s main job, she is also a supply teacher – crafting is her hobby. When she is not teaching, she spends practically every day needle felting.

Sue has work on show at the Number Four gallery by St Abbs, and is busy putting together more work for the Glendale Agricultural Show, the Lady Waterford Hall and the St Abbs Wool Festival later this year.

Sue said: “The most fun to make are the off-the-wall ideas that evolve from wordplay and random, misheard conversations.”
