A capacity crowd of around 140 people of all political viewpoints turned out at the latest hustings events in the Berwick constituency.
According to one of the organisers of the Alnwick Council of Churches event at St James’s URC on Sunday night, Rev Alan Craig chaired the gathering in a most able manner injecting humour where necessary. John Holwell said: “All six candidates attended and in total 42 questions had been submitted prior to the event.
“As it would have taken nearly six hours to deal with all the questions they were condensed into six topics ranging from how the candidates would help persecuted Christians to child poverty.
“There was a very positive and civil atmosphere and while there were clear disagreements on policy, all candidates were most respectful of each other.
“Coun Heather Cairns proposed a vote of thanks to Rev Alan Craig for his chairmanship of the meeting.
“This was politics at its best.”
