A group from Northumberland College’s Outdoor Adventure Academy is planning to trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal in Morocco, which stands at 4,167 metres.

Fourteen students, aged from 17 to 46, and two tutors from the Kirkley Hall campus are tackling the expedition to the Atlas Mountains this summer.

They are aiming to make a positive contribution to the local community, plan and organise the trip as independently and enviromentally-friendly as possible and of course reach the summit of the mountain.

They will be flying to Marrakesh on Saturday, June 11, before travelling to the mountain village of Imlil, where they will be based for a week.

The main trek itself is expected to take two to three days and the summit bid will have the group leaving camp at aound 5am.

They are looking or sponsors for the trip and will carry a flag to the summit displaying the logos of all their sponsors.

Half the money raised will be donated to the charity Education For All, which helps girls living in rural and mountainous regions in Morocco into further education.

Tutor Carl Halliday said: “This is going to be a real adventure for the students and an experience that will hopefully open their eyes and minds to different cultures, beliefs and lifestyles.”
