Straker strikes out in Alnmouth victory

Alnwick 1sts went down to a 53-run defeat when they travelled to take on Cowgate Sports 1sts in the Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League at the weekend.

Cowgate batted first and they lost an early wicket to Ben Threfall, who went on to take 4-53.

Jaswinder Singh hit 70 and there were also useful contribuitions from Usman Mahroof 45), Max Moss (38) and Richard Crawford (35) as the home side posted a decent score of 231 all out.

Max Harruison with 3-24, provided Threfall with the best support with the ball.

Threfall then turned his attention to the bat, and he opened up with a useful 49, but it wasn’t until Andrew Scott got to the crease and top scored with 74 that the run rate started to push along.

However, Alnwick were always struggling to match the home side and eventually they fell short at 178 all out.

Raza Noor did most of the damage with figures of 5-41.

By comparison, Alnmouth and Lesbury 1sts had a big nine wicket win away to Lintz 1sts.

Lintz batted first and with Ryan McVittie hitting 50, Gary Christie 40, and three others batsmen in the 20s, they managed to put on 199-9 in their 50 overs.

Jhy Berry was Alnmouth’s most successful bowler with figures of 4-37.

Russell Hughes hit 68 for Alnmouth in reply, but it was fellow opener Paul Straker who stole the show, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 91, which included 13 boundaries, as the Northumbrians romped to 200 for the loss of only one wicket.

Alnmouth and Lesbury 2nds went down by seven wickets to Lintz 2nds in the reverse fixture..

Evan Moir top scored with 56 and there were knocks of 28 from opener Ian Pearson and Andrew Hodgson as the home side managed to post 157-7 in 25 overs.

matthew Wilson took 4-39 for Lintz, who in reply coasted to 160-2 with Chris Gray on 72 not out and Michael Edmonds unbeaten on 50 at the end of the innings.

The game between Alnwick 2nds and Cowgate 2nds was one of a few matches cancelled at the weekend because of the weather.
