STATION: '˜Shed' was a warehouse

Congratulations on your splendid coverage of the recent episode of the TV series Restoration Man, which described the superb restoration of the station building at Whittingham, (Northumberland Gazette, January 21).

What a pity that no one has corrected the mistaken naming of the former goods warehouse as an ‘engine shed’.

Whittingham, like Mindrum, had what the North Eastern Railway described as a ‘four wagon warehouse’ unlike the much smaller ‘two wagon’ types provided for Akeld, Glanton, Hedgeley, Ilderton and Wooperton.

The only engine shed provided for locomotives working the Alnwick-Cornhill line was at Alnmouth, although there were turntables at both Alnwick and Cornhill.
