A charitable leisure and cultural trust has thrown its support behind the Best of Northumberland awards, agreeing to sponsor one of the prizes.

Active Northumberland has come on board by once again putting its name alongside the Sporting Achievement accolade.

The prize honours individuals who have proved outstanding achievement in a specific sporting field.

But not only does it recognise sporting skill, it also rewards drive, ambition and determination, even through the face of adversity.

Last year’s winner was powerlifter James Duff, from Ashington.

David Hall, chairman of the Active Northumberland board, said: “The Best of Northumberland awards are a great way to recognise all the hard work and extraordinary effort of so many amazing people throughout our county.

“We are delighted to be sponsoring the Sporting Achievement category again and look forward to reviewing the entries.”

The annual Best of Northumberland awards honour unsung community heroes who do amazing things.

Readers are being encouraged to nominate individuals and groups in the county who go above and beyond the call of duty and/or show incredible strength and courage in the face of adversity.

Nominations have already started to come in and the deadline for entries is Friday, August 19.

Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette, Morpeth Herald and News Post Leader – and Tweeddale Press’s Berwick Advertiser, the awards are a celebration of bravery, determination, commitment and achievement.

We are looking for people who, in their everyday lives, have managed to do something extraordinary for the benefit of themselves and others.

The awards are split into 13 categories, recognising a cross-section of local heroes.

The other categories are Community Group; Community Champion; Student of the Year; Fund-raiser; Child of Achievement; Child of Courage; Green Champion; Role Model; Volunteer; Sports Team; Good Neighbour; and Lifetime Contribution Award.

Readers can nominate by email or post. For details, see the nomination form below.

The winners will be presented with their awards at a ceremony at Linden Hall, Longhorsley, on the evening of Thursday, September 15. The headline sponsor is The Banks Group, which is also sponsoring the Green Champion award.
