Society president to perform pre-season concert ahead of Playhouse closure
Alnwick Music Society's president Martin Roscoe, one of the UK's most respected pianists, will be performing a pre-season concert next week.
Entitled Nocturnes and Night Music, it will take place at The Alnwick Playhouse on Wednesday (June 20), at 7.30pm.
Commencing with a work by John Field, the inventor of the nocturne, Martin will cover music by a wide range of composers, including Chopin, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, Faure and Szymanowski.
Among the less familiar fare will be a lovely piece by London-born composer Arnold Bax, composed in 1914, but never performed in his lifetime.
Its first professional performance was by Martin in a BBC recording in 1986.
Scriabin’s beautiful Nocturne for the Left Hand was written after the composer suffered damage to his right hand from over-practice, while Bartok’s exciting The Night’s Music conjures up the magical sounds of an Hungarian summer evening.
This feast of music, ideal for a June evening, will be a very special concert as it is the last opportunity for the society to present a piano recital before the Playhouse closes for a major refurbishment.
Next season’s concerts will be held at various venues in Alnwick. For details see www.alnwickmusicsociety.co.uk
