One of the North East’s leading providers of affordable homes to rent and buy has agreed to sponsor a category in this year’s Best of Northumberland Awards.

Isos Housing has given its backing to the Volunteer of the Year prize, which honours an individual, group or organisation that undertakes an unpaid activity where time is given to help an organisation or an individual to whom they are not related.

A spokeswoman for the group said Isos was pleased to be involved in this year’s event, which honours unsung community heroes who do amazing things.

She said: “Isos is delighted to sponsor the Volunteer of the Year award, which recognises the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities.”

Isos is a landlord which provides affordable housing to those in need.

In October 2014, following consultation with its residents, staff and partners, Isos Housing and Cestria Community Housing Association started a new, exciting chapter in their histories by coming together to work in partnership within the Isos Group, with Isos Housing as the parent company and Cestria as the wholly-owned subsidiary.

Between them, they own and manage 17,000 homes across the North East, from Berwick in the north, down to Stockton in the south, and across to Cumbria in the west.

As well as renting homes, they also sell them, predominantly through shared ownership schemes.

Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette, Morpeth Herald, News Post Leader, as well as Tweeddale Press’s Berwick Advertiser – the annual Best of Northumberland Awards are a celebration of bravery, commitment and achievement.

The awards are split into 12 categories. As well as the volunteer award, there are prizes for Sporting Achievement; Community Group; Community Champion; Child of Courage; Emergency Services Award; Role Model; Green Champion; Child of Achievement; Fund-raiser of the Year; Good Neighbour; Lifetime Contribution.

The deadline for entries closed last week and the judging panel is meeting to decide the winners for each section.

A ceremony will be staged at the Macdonald Linden Hall Hotel, in Longhorsley, on Thursday, September 10, and the winners will be presented with their awards.
