Snow causes problems for drivers in Northumberland

Snow on the B6341 between Rothbury and the New Moor House crossroads was causing problems for drivers earlier this morning, while the Alnwick Town Reserves football match at Rothbury was cancelled due to the conditions.

Northumberland County Council gritters have been out in the county since 5am and are currently working in all problem areas.

The Met Office has extended its yellow warning of snow and ice further south, to include Northumberland and Durham.

Heavy outbreaks of snow are still likely over high ground, with up to 10cm expected. Snow is also predicted at lower levels, with up to three centimetres possible.

The warning says: 'Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow over central and southeast Scotland will gradually clear south during Saturday, to become increasingly focused over parts of northern England. Some locally heavy outbreaks of snow are still likely over high ground with snow also to low levels at times, mainly inland. 1-3cm of snow is possible above 100-200m and 5 to 10cm above 300m

'In addition, icy surfaces are possible, particularly where rain falls onto any freezing surfaces and over lying snow. Please be aware of difficult travelling conditions and the risk of some transport disruption due to both snow and icy surfaces. This warning has been updated to move the area further south, whilst at the same time lowering the risk of medium impacts due to snow.'

The Chief Forecaster says: 'A front over central and south east Scotland will move slowly and erratically southwards into the far north of England. This will bring outbreaks of mainly rain and sleet over eastern coastal areas and to low levels, but some snow to low levels inland and heavy snow likely across higher ground at times.'
