Smokers urged to be quitters on No Smoking Day

Smokers in Northumberland are being urged to take the first step in giving up cigarettes for good today.

While studies show that two-thirds of smokers want to quit, nearly one in five UK adults continue to smoke, including 16.5 per cent of people in Northumberland. In the Berwick constituency, the figure is 19.4 per cent.

This year's No Smoking Day theme is Proud to be a Quitter. Northumberland County Council and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be active on No Smoking Day to help smokers make this the day you start to stop.

Coun Susan Dungworth, cabinet member for adult care and public health at Northumberland County Council, said: "We understand that the majority of smokers want to stop smoking, but many find the task too daunting. No Smoking Day is the perfect opportunity to inspire smokers in Northumberland to quit for good. With support, smokers are more likely to succeed in their quit attempt. That is why we are backing No Smoking Day and educating smokers on the range of local services and resources available to them."

For anyone thinking of or in the process of quitting, more help is on hand to support people in Northumberland to stop smoking. Northumberland Stop Smoking Service has recruited eight new specialist advisors and started new sessions ahead of national No Smoking Day. The service, which is provided by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, now has more than 100 advisors offering support across the county.
