Crowds of people descended on Alnmouth beach to take part in the annual Volcano Night challenge on Saturday.
Armed with spades and piles of wood, they had 10 minutes to build a sandcastle and then erect a bonfire on the top.
The winning team was the one whose bonfire was the last to stay alight, after the others had sunk into the sea.
This year the winners were a local team who put their success down to firelighters, more firelighters and total ignorance!
The event was organised by Alnmouth Community Rowing Association and proceeds went to Amble RNLI.
