More than 1,000 tickets have been snapped up just a day after the launch of a Simple Minds gig at the Pastures, in Alnwick, part of a concert double-bill this summer.

Scottish rock band Simple Minds will perform on Saturday, August 16, followed by a rousing, patriotic prom-style concert, complete with an aerobatic display by a Second World War Spitfire, the next evening.

The Gazette revealed, on Wednesday, the return of the summer concerts in the shadow of Alnwick Castle, which have seen performances by the likes of Jools Holland, Status Quo and, in 2012, Jessie J. The box offices opened yesterday morning and the early rush for tickets has amazed the promoters KAL Music.

Keith Louch said: “We are absolutely delighted with the sale of more than 1,000 tickets in the first day. This is better than expected and we are on target for another sell-out in The Pastures. Simple Minds are a superb live band and we are excited that they have agreed to perform at Alnwick.”

After the huge success of previous concerts, this is the first double-bill announced for the venue. There was no concert last year when Alnwick Castle decided to make 2013 a fallow year to allow the Pastures to recover after a large number of fans attended both the Jessie J concert and an Olympic Torch event.

A Northumberland Estates spokesman said: “We’re delighted to welcome back live music in the Pastures. We’ve had a long tradition of great nights and I’m sure that this year’s combination of Simple Minds and the Scottish National Orchestra will give everyone an opportunity to experience and enjoy at least one, if not two, nights of fantastic live music.”

Tickets are on sale via the KAL Music website as well as Alnwick Playhouse and Berwick Maltings Theatre (details below).

Simple Minds is fronted by vocalist Jim Kerr and was formed in 1977. The group has had a string of Top 20 UK singles, including Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking and Belfast Child. With more than 35 years of performing behind them, as well as three Number One successes on the UK album chart, Simple Minds continues to tour regularly.

On Sunday, August 17, the music turns more orchestral as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will present The Alnwick Family Proms Concert – a programme full of popular classical pieces, film scores and culminating in a traditional, flag-waving finale. It will begin with an aerobatic display by an original Second World War Spitfire as the orchestra plays stirring pieces associated with this magnificent aircraft. Both concerts will finish with the customary fireworks display and picnics will be encouraged. The Gazette is once again the media partner for both concerts.
