Shorebird celebrations on Holy Island this weekend

It’s nearing the end of the breeding season and it has been an amazing and challenging few months for shorebirds on Lindisfarne NNR, so Reserve staff and volunteers are celebrating all things shorebird.

Shorebirds are birds which use the shore to nest, shelter or feed. They are an iconic part of Lindsifarne NNR it’s hard to imagine the Reserve without such species as the ringed plover, which can be seen calling and flitting across the open shore, and our amazing tern species. All five species of tern can be seen on Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve.

Reserve Warden Mhairi Maclauchlan said: "We have even more to celebrate in 2016 with the second year of our additional shorebird wardens who are still out on the beach helping to protect these vulnerable nesters.

"The public have been amazing this year helping the shorebirds to nest in peace by keeping dogs on leads and taking heed of signs. It won't be until the middle of August that we say farewell to our shorebirds completely and this is a chance to raise awareness and have some fun."

There will be crafts and games at the Window on Wild Lindisfarne on Saturday - drop in any time between 10.30am and 1pm.
