Shoplifting crackdown results in arrests

Police made 28 arrests throughout Northumberland as part of a crackdown on shoplifting.

The winter campaign was launched in November, under the umbrella of Operation Soundwave, aimed at tackling theft and burglary during the festive season.

The crackdown has led to a total of 350 people being arrested across the Northumbria Police force area.

It also resulted in a reduction in shoplifting offences compared to the weeks preceding the launch of the operation.

Meanwhile, the detection rate stands at almost 80 per cent, meaning four out of every five offences have been detected.

Activity has included extra high-profile and plain clothes police patrols.

Officers have worked with retailers and shop security staff and used CCTV and Shopwatch schemes to identify suspects.

The operation will continue into January.
