A Northumberland spa has been named as the best in the north of England, after winning two prizes at a prestigious industry awards evening.
The Secret Spa at Village Farm, Shilbottle, took the title of Spa of the Year – Overall Winner at the English Hair and Beauty Awards Chapter 2.
It pipped the winner of the North West category – Bali Health Lounge, Manchester – and the winner of the Yorkshire section – Kuki Hair and Beauty Spa, in York – to win the coveted north of England accolade. It came after The Secret Spa had won the Spa of the Year title for the North East.
The team found out they had done the double at a glittering awards evening at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel on Sunday.
And Sarah Hindhaugh, who has run the spa for nearly 20 years, says it was her proudest moment in business.
“It is wonderful news and totally unexpected – I didn’t think we stood a chance,” she said.
“We didn’t enter these awards ourselves and a secret shopper came out to see what we offered at first hand, which makes the success even more pleasing and it is wonderful to get this recognition.
“Winning these awards is my proudest moment. I met Prince Charles, but this tops it.”
Sarah said that the victory was down to a team effort and thanked her dedicated staff – Kimberley Verrill, Carly Russell, Kayla Rickaby and Kelsie Inglis – for their efforts.
Asked why she thought a spa in Shilbottle beat some big guns from the likes of Manchester and York, Sarah said: “I think it is the personal touch – the fact we get to know our guests, remember them and do the little things.
“It is all about customer care and I think we do that well.”
The Secret Spa offer luxurious spa experiences for him and for her, and the opportunity to unwind, relax and re-energise. It lends techniques from ancient and modern worlds, along with premium products from Espa to provide first-class treatments for the mind, body and soul.

In another nod to Northumberland, The Powder Room Spa and Beauty, in Alnwick Market Place, was a finalist in the Most Wanted Salon of the Year category for the North East region.
While it lost out on the award to Silhouette Beauty Room, in Hartlepool, owner Leonie Dial said she was absolutely over the moon to be nominated.
Sunday’s award ceremony was raising money for Make A Wish Foundation.
