The dog was removed by Northumberland County Council’s dog warden and the owner has been traced and paid the farmer for the dead sheep and costs incurred.

Following the attack, police are warning people to look after their dogs when out in rural areas.

Neighbourhood Acting Inspector Sharon Wilmore-Greaves said: “This was a distressing incident that could easily have been avoided if the dog had been on a leash.

“It was fortunate that the affected sheep had not been lambing at the time, or the outcome could have been much worse.

“We want to remind dog owners to make sure their dogs are kept under control at all times, in particular when near farm land and other animals.”

Inquiries are ongoing into the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 577 of 22/02/17.
