FOOTBALL legend Alan Shearer will be visiting Alnwick for the Queen’s visit to the town, in his capacity as Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland, it has been confirmed.

The former Newcastle United and England striker will support and assist the Duchess of Northumberland, who will be hosting the Royal visit as Lord Lieutenant – the Queen’s official representative for the county.

Shearer, who was awarded an OBE by the Queen 10 years ago this month, raised £1.6million in his testimonial match, which benefited 14 charities including £400,000 for the NSPCC and £320,000 to complete the Alan Shearer Centre, a respite care facility in Newcastle for disabled children.

He is also an ambassador for the NSPCC and, in 2008, raised over £300,000 for Sport Relief.
