Representatives of Amble Town Council laid wreaths on behalf of residents at the town’s war memorials on Friday, following a two-minutes’ silence at 3pm,

Later in the day, a beacon was lit up like a Christmas tree to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

Coquet Yacht Club decided to hang festive illuminations on the beacon at The Braid after the town council announced that plans to light it properly had to be cancelled.

The club commodore Phil Derry said: “Because there are so many ex-service people in the yacht club, as well as members whose relations were involved in the Second World War, we felt that the beacon had to be lit to celebrate this great moment in history.

“So we decorated it with Christmas lights, ran the cable across the Braid and turned the lights on to light up the beacon.”
