Seahouses RNLI called after report of sick child on Holy Island

At 5.09am, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses Lifeboat to help the North East Ambulance Service reach the ill child. The lifeboat was called as it was outside the safe crossing time for Holy Island Causeway.

The all-weather lifeboat, the RNLB Grace Darling, was quickly launched, as the ambulance arrived at Seahouses from its station at Belford.

The lifeboat coxswain queried the status of the tide, as it was ebbing, and he was concerned whether the lifeboat would be able to reach the island pier due to the depth of water.

Holy Island Coastguards had also been mobilised, and they checked and confirmed that the causeway was now safe to cross.

The lifeboat was stood down and the ambulance diverted to Holy Island by road. On arrival, it was escorted by the Coastguards to the casualty’s location.

Seahouses Lifeboat Operations Manager Ian Clayton said: “There was a near full turn out of our crew this morning for this call, and we will always assist the ambulance crews when requested, as well as the community at Holy Island who are cut off from the mainland twice a day by the tide. We hope the young child makes a full recovery.”
