Scout troop appeals for funds

At the end of July, representatives from 1st Whittingham BP Scout Group will travel to Uganda’s remote Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

They will take part in projects with the local community to help them work closely with their environment so that the ancient forest and the mountain gorillas that live there are protected, and the health and prosperity of the people are improved.

The Scouts will plant indigenous trees, introduce efficient clean-burn stoves and low-tech rainwater harvesting systems, build nature trails and set up a trail run.

Each member of the team needs to raise £2,700 to fund their place, and while the money-making efforts are going well, there is still a way to go. As part of this, a fund-raising auction at The Queen’s Head, Glanton, is taking place on Saturday, February 27, at 7pm. A number of lots have been donated – including a family pass to Bamburgh Castle, a £10 Turnbull’s voucher and two tickets for Kelso Races – and the public is being encouraged to come along.

Group Scout Master Ninette Gray said: “The expedition will make a huge impact on the Scouts, broadening their horizons, teaching them new skills and educating them about other cultures.”

The troop has thanked everyone who has already supported the cause, including the Rotary Club of Till and Glendale. Further events to boost funds are planned, including a pop-up restaurant.
