A family of five from rural north Northumberland, the winners of a satellite broadband system, are delighted with their new connectivity.

The Turner family, from East Ditchburn, near North Charlton, came out on top in our competition to win the broadband system, installed and with a year’s free service, as we teamed up with provider Avonline.

The family – parents Duncan and Linda and their three children, Patrick, Robert and Daniel – had been relying on a dial-up connection with a typical speed of 31.2kbps and explained that they ‘felt increasingly removed from the outside world’.

But in November, Avonline installed their new satellite system, which has been a real success.

Linda said: “It’s fantastic really. There can be a delay because of the satellite, but once the information comes up, it’s all there at once.

“It’s so much better than what we had before, it’s amazing. The kids can do their homework, no problem.

“I have done quite a bit of online shopping, which I have never been able to do before. It’s such a difference.

“It’s nice to be able to keep in touch with everybody and not feel cut off.”

And the family has also been impressed with the service provided by Avonline and may well renew the subscription after the year’s free service.

“I think we probably will keep it on,” Linda said.

“I don’t think we can go back to what we had. Once you’ve had broadband, you can’t go back to dial-up.

“They were very efficient when they came to install it.

“I have rung them up with queries and they have been great. They have been really, really helpful.”
