SAFETY: Jackets are a step too far

I was heartened to read of the volunteers who turned out to clean up our local beaches, (Northumberland Gazette, September 21).

My sincere congratulations to them all.

However, I was equally disheartened to note in the photographs of the aforementioned event a profusion of the now omnipresent hi-vis jackets.

Why on earth would a group of adults be required to be attired in his-vis vests on a Northumberland beach?

What calamity is likely to befall them on a deserted foreshore, with 360 degree visibility, in perfect weather conditions?

Yet another example of health and safety gone mad.
