Saddle up for major bike-ride challenge

Cyclists in Northumberland who are looking for a challenge this year are being encouraged to take on the Coast to Castles bike ride from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

The three-day event takes place over the weekend of September 12-14, with cyclists tackling a 200-mile route along the Northumberland coast, through the Scottish Borders and on to Scotland’s capital.

The ride is part of a number of fund-raising activities that Sustrans – the pioneer of the UK’s Safe Routes concept – is planning in 2015 to mark the 20th anniversary of the National Cycle Network.

Funds raised will go towards the upkeep of the Network.

The Coast to Castles ride costs £265, plus a £250 minimum sponsorship target or upfront donation.

Riders will be supported the whole way, led by experienced Sustrans staff and volunteers. There will also be first aid and bike maintenance provided.

Accommodation at bike-friendly B&Bs, breakfast and lunch will be included and riders will have their luggage transferred.

Other fund-raising rides in 2015 include an epic version of the Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride from June 27 to July 13.
