Lesbury WI president Susan welcomed the members and our speaker for the evening.
It was a shame on such a glorious early summer’s evening that so many of the membership had been unable to attend due to illness and family reasons but our thoughts were with them.
Some months there can be very little institute business to discuss but this month it was rather different.
Firstly, there was the finalising of details for afternoon tea at Doxford Hall in July, our own celebration of 100 years of the WI.
Secondly, arrangements were made for this summer’s outing in August to Louise and Ron Bowey’s garden at Ponteland.
Finally, as many may have seen in the national news coverage there was a special day as the NFWI hosted its centenary annual meeting at the Royal Albert Hall, London, which was attended by Sandringham’s most famous WI member, Her Majesty the Queen.
Janet Towers had been the group WI’s representative and gave a lovely report on what sounded a truly magnificent day with some amazingly inspirational talks from some very special ladies.
Unfortunately this unusual amount of business made the evening’s speaker – Jane Coltman, the Northumberland Gazette photographer, had to wait very patiently.
To compound the delay, the projector screen had gone missing. But quick thinking from Jane, who suggested using the end wall of the hall. So finally, after much scraping of chairs and a change of orientation, we were treated to an insight of Jane’s portfolio.
It showed what a diverse brief a local newspaper photographer has to cover.
Over supper, the members were able to chat to Jane, particularly as a few faces had been recognised in some of her shots.
The competition was for an on old school photograph, judged by Jane. Results were 1 Penny Hewitt; 2 June Green; 3 Veronica Merryweather.
The birthday flowers went to June Green.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, July 14. The speaker is Dr Adrian Jannetta, with the subject Where are the Aliens? The competition is A Star – any medium.
