Roadworks delayed

UNFORESEEN structural problems have led to delays in roadworks on the A1, but the contractor responsible has not run out of money.

The Highways Agency has refuted claims that Balfour Beatty, the contractor responsible for the Shilbottle underpass works, is low on cash, but said it has asked the company to look at works to ensure best value for money.

A spokeswoman said: “The bridge repair works are taking longer to complete than originally anticipated as a result of a number of factors.

“These include the severe adverse winter weather at the end of 2010 and the discovery of unforeseen additional work that needs to be undertaken on the Shilbottle bridge.”
