Riley's Fish Shack set to appear on national TV

Riley’s Fish Shack, based in King Edward’s Bay in Tynemouth, is set to feature in the new TV series ‘Hidden Restaurants’ on Channel 4.

The tiny restaurant has caught the eye of Michel Roux Junior, who is the latest to try the range of fish dishes available.

The programme follows the chef as he goes in search of ‘secret’ eateries and food mavericks, with Wednesday’s show focusing on the North East.

The eatery, run by Adam and Lucy Riley, originally operated from a mobile cart at Tynemouth Market but following a crowd-funding campaign, opened on the beach front in two 20ft containers.

Last November food critic Jay Rayner was full of praise for Riley’s, calling his meal “the eating experience of the year” for his review in The Guardian and The Observer.

Viewers of Hidden Restaurants – made by Cardiff-based production company Boomerang – will find out what Roux Junior thinks of the Geordie favourite in the episode which also features The Treehouse at The Alnwick Garden, and the Cook House in Newcastle’s Ouseburn.

Riley’s Fish Shack, which posted a picture of them with Michel Roux last August, wrote on their Facebook page: “So you may remember us posting a picture the fabulous Michel Roux Jr back in August... well, we can now finally fill you guys in on what it was all about!

“We had TV producers Boomerang join us for a day of filming down at King Edward’s Bay for a brand new TV Series #HiddenKitchens in which Michel explores small, out of the way dining experiences before creating a ‘Hidden Kitchen’ of his own.

“We had a fab day cooking and chatting with Michel for what turned out to be the final voyage of the old bicycle shack... what a way to go!!!”

The episode airs on Wednesday, Channel 4, at 8pm.
