A former professional footballer who had to retire early from the game he loved has joined forces with his girlfriend to start a freelance personal training business.
Ben Webster and partner Laura Whitlie, who live in Warkworth, have launched HetrainsShetrains, which covers the Northumberland region.
Sport has been Ben’s life from an early age and he said that personal fitness seemed a natural way to go after he was forced to quit football in 2014 due to a repetitive knee injury.
The 29-year-old attended the Newcastle United Football Academy from 1993 to 2004.
Captaining every team at the Academy up to the Reserves, he also played for Newcastle’s first team and went on to play professionally across Sweden, Finland, Belgium and Thailand.
Ben, who also won eight caps for England Schoolboys, admits that giving up the game was tough, but he is looking forward to starting a new chapter in his life.
He said: “It was horrible walking away from football, but we have decided to give this a go. We are armed with equipment and a passion for fitness and wellbeing and we cater our programmes to a variety of individuals, couples and groups, providing a unique, personal service for every client.”
Ben is continuing to develop his career in fitness, qualifying as a personal trainer, training to become a speed and coordination coach with young athletes and group fitness as well as gaining a diploma in nutrition.
Laura, 23, has more than three years’ experience as a personal trainer and a diploma in nutrition and sports science and is committed to helping clients reach their fitness goals. Recently travelling to Thailand, she developed new training and nutrition techniques, managing more than 100 clients in Bangkok.
As qualified nutritionalists, Ben and Laura can provide advice and products to benefit and enhance any exercise regime.
