Residents clamour for new pub and more affordable housing

Householders provided feedback on a range of issues during a recent consultation to help shape a strategy for the village over the next five-to-10 years.

In total, 92 survey questionnaires were received, while 48 people attended drop-in sessions.

Now, a summary of the responses has been compiled and it is clear that people believe that a comprehensive plan is needed to keep Longhoughton sustainable, protect facilities – with many being lost in recent years – and improve infrastructure.

Among the feedback, 80% of respondents would like to see a pub in the village.

Meanwhile, a good majority of people felt that the increase in housing should be embraced, as it will make the village more sustainable, but believe this increase has been done without due regard to infrastructure. Residents want more affordable housing.

The survey showed that 70% of people are in favour of establishing a village green on the former Johnnie Johnston Site, while 80% support the multi-use games area being developed in Longhoughton.

The feedback showed that 54% believe health facilities are not adequate, 57% have problems with dog fouling, 58% consider the pavements to be in a poor state and 37% said broadband was inadequate.

The steering group behind the plan is encouraging residents to give feedback to the summary by Tuesday, before it begins to develop actions to deal with the needs and issues which have been identified.
