Her companion raised the alarm around 3pm and Northumberland and North of Tyne mountain rescue teams were scrambled by Northumbria Police.

A North East Ambulance Service paramedic and a mountain rescue medic administered pain relief to the casualty.

Other team members ferried kit from vehicles at Langleeford Hope in case a stretcher carry was required.

However, due to the woman’s condition and location it was decided to call for air support. Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 from Prestwick attended and took the woman to Borders General Hospital in Melrose.

Mountain rescue teams thanked the walkers who kept the woman company.
