Rescue crews called out to Holy Island causeway

A statement from Holy Island Coastguard Rescue Team said: 'Coastguard Operations Centre Aberdeen was alerted via a 999 call to the presence of a number of people cut off by tide on Holy Island Causeway.

'The team were deployed to the scene and confirmed three car occupants were safe on dry land, and a further two motorcycle occupants were safe in the refuge box, all persons were then conveyed to dry land by the team.

'Seahouses RNLI Inshore Lifeboat was deployed but stood down.'

A statement from Seahouses RNLI said: 'At 2.37pm, Aberdeen Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat, to a report of persons in the water at Holy Island Causeway. A car and motorcycle were believed to be on the bridge there near the refuge box. It was half-an-hour after high tide.

'The Inshore Lifeboat was launched and made best speed to the causeway. The Holy Island Coastguard Rescue Team had also been mobilised and were able to get the people to safety as the tide was receding quite quickly. The Inshore Lifeboat was not required, and was stood down as it approached the scene, and returned to station.

'None of the people involved required any medical assistance. The incident was controlled by Aberdeen Coastguard Operations Centre, due to the high volume of incidents being handled by Humber Coastguard Operations centre at Bridlington.'
