A bid to demolish the former youth hostel attached to Kielder Community First School has been given the go-ahead.
The scheme, which will include making good of school elevations and other works to form a rationalised stepped and footpath approach to the school building and expansion of parking provision, was unanimously approved at Tuesday night’s meeting of Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee.
Coun Bernard Pidcock questioned why a tourist facility such as this was being demolished and was told that the hostel was redundant.
The local member, Coun John Riddle, explained that the Youth Hostel Association had invested in the site some years ago, but it didn’t do as well as expected and the organisation chose to turn its attention to its other hostels. He added that there was no likelihood of anyone taking it on.
