Red light for crossing funding

FUNDING for a pedestrian crossing in Rothbury has been discontinued, a parish council has been told.

At the last Rothbury Parish Council meeting county councillor Steven Bridgett told members that funding for the crossing, which was set to be stationed by the war memorial in the village, is no longer available.

It was included in plans for a cyclepath which is currently under construction alongside the River Coquet from Rothbury to Thropton.

As part of the plans money was put aside to provide links to and from school.

Coun Bridgett said: “Part of the cyclepath scheme as I understood it was funding to provide links to school from the path to the first school. My understanding was that there would be a crossing possibly in the centre of the village included in the funding.

“But that is now not the case.”

Parish chairman Coun Peter Dawson said: “What really gets my goat is that we think we are going to get funding for the cyclepath and part of that deal was for a crossing.

“We have a beautiful cyclepath, which some of us, me included, didn’t want, but we have it and we should have the crossing. It just shows a total disregard for us.

“We get told that schemes are put in place but not when they fall through.”
