The Rugby World Cup has helped to generate a huge demand for accommodation in the region.

Cottages in Northumberland, which rents out more than 140 properties across the county and Tyneside, has reported a 20 per cent increase in bookings.

The World Cup, Great North Run and Eat! Festival are some of the events that have contributed to its record figures.

Director of operations Angela Mazingham said: “We are fully booked for all 140 properties for the dates that coincide with the events and festivals held across the region.

“We are delighted that the region has been recognised as a great place to host such events that help bring tourism to the region.

“Our self-catering rental properties offer more flexibility than a hotel and customers can enjoy a home from home experience, which is more attractive than the confines of a hotel room.”
