Recognition of town heroes

Unsung heroes who have Alnwick close to their hearts are in line for new honours, the Mayor’s Civic Awards.

Coun Alan Symmonds’s initiative will round off his year as mayor and the tenure of the present council, before local government elections in May.

He said the idea was to recognise individuals who had ‘demonstrated significant involvement, contribution and dedication to the town’.

This could be in charity work, citizenship, caring or community participation and involvement.

There are two categories, adults and young people aged 18 or under. Nominations must be made by April 26.

Coun Symmonds said: “I would like to encourage people to think about those who really make a big difference in our community because of what they quietly get on and do, and to put them forward for a Civic Award.

“Many individuals and groups in our town owe a lot to such people and I feel that it is extremely important that we recognise their contributions.”

Nomination forms are available from clerk Bill Batey on 01665 714922 or bill.batey@bt connect.com or to download from the town council’s website, www.alnwicktowncoun cil.co.uk
