The AOC met personnel who provide essential services that enable the base to run smoothly and efficiently in support of the Station’s 24/7 operational role in UK and NATO air defence.

He was introduced to fire-fighters of the Defence Fire and Rescue Management Organisation, who provide 24-hour fire cover at RAF Boulmer, personnel from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and its contractors who manage the vast estate, and the RAF Boulmer Safety, Health and Environmental Protection team.

AVM Mayhew then moved on to the Command, Control, Computers and Communications (C4) Flight where he learned of a local initiative to develop understanding of information management in a rapidly-changing environment.

The AOC was so impressed with the innovative ideas that he has requested that they be developed more widely across Number 1 Group.

After lunch, AVM Mayhew presented honours and awards at a ceremony in the Officers’ Mess, with families of the recipients present to see their loved ones recognised for their achievements within the RAF.

Awards presented included Air Officer Commanding 1 Group Commendations, Long Service and Good Conduct Medals, and a Royal Warrant.

In a speech, AVM Mayhew expressed his gratitude to all of the recipients for the vital contribution they have made to the RAF. “The record and breadth of service, heroism and courage demonstrated here is humbling,” he said.

“The work of all the recipients today, and everyone who works at RAF Boulmer, is hugely valued, not only by myself, but by the Chief of the Air Staff who has also visited the Station recently. Thank you all for the work you have done and what you will do operationally in the future.”

The AOC also took the opportunity to thank all families of our RAF personnel for the vital support they give to their loves ones in what can often be difficult times.
