Pupils' work is set to feature in anthology

Year 5 pupils at James Calvert Spence College (JCSC) entered the summer competition, Ancient Adventures, which challenged them to produce a short story based around British and world historical events and topics, exploring the people, customs and life-styles, or even based around an inspirational figure.

Judging was carried out by the editorial department at Young Writers, an organisation which aims to encourage young people to engage in creative writing through national poetry and creative writing competitions with prizes and interactive workshops for all ages.

Successful stories, based on perception, imagination, expression, creativity and use of language, were selected for publication in the anthology.

And 61 of the JCSC students had their work identified by the judges as being of a standard high enough to be included in the final publication, which will be released at the end of August.

Chairman of governors Scott Dickinson said: “This is a fantastic example of the high-quality work delivered in our schools. The students and their families should be extremely proud of them all, as I am.”

Participating schools are entered into a prize draw and have the chance to win cash prizes, which can be used to purchase further resources to encourage writing.

JCSC will be presented with a first-edition copy of the book, which will include all 61 of the Year 5 stories. Additional copies can be ordered by parents and families.
