Pub saviour's plans for new traders' directory

A Lowick businessman found it so hard to find craftsmen to help with his refurbishment of the Black Bull pub that he has decided to do something about it.

Karl Crane, who is restoring Lowick's historic pub, the Black Bull, is also building a trades directory of people who can help do work locally.

Karl Crane has teamed up with Lowick Parish Council to create a local trades’ directory and they are now appealing for anyone with a small business to step forward.

Karl is currently restoring and modernising the Black Bull with a view to reopening it as a high-quality gastro-pub and hotel, but his search for local craftsmen made it harder than he anticipated.

“I was astonished how hard it was to get the names and addresses of local firms who could do the work needed,” Karl said. “You can ask around and eventually find somebody, but it’s not easy and anyone new to the area would not know where to start.

“Obviously you want to find someone to do the work who lives locally and support the community you live in.

“So we thought a trades’ directory that was regularly updated and available online, or through the shop, would be enormously helpful.”

It’s a free service, so send a flyer or description to Karl via [email protected] or 01289 388978.

The production of a local trades directory is one of the targets the parish council has as it plans a village open day on Saturday, September 24.

The event, Your Lowick – Your Future, will also highlight local projects and activities that everyone can get involved in.
