The award is based on an independent inspection from the real-ale auditors, Cask Marque.

Chris Hume, who runs the pub on Fenkle Street, passed a rigorous inspection from a Cask Marque assessor, who is a qualified brewer with extensive senior level experience of working in the cask ale industry.

Chris said: “This award is a great endorsement for us. A lot of our customers visit the pub especially for the cask ale and it is really gratifying to know that we are getting the quality just right.”

The pub is now part of the World’s Biggest Ale Trail, where users of the CaskFinder app visit Cask Marque-accredited pubs, where they are encouraged to scan the QR code on the pub’s certificate to confirm their visit, climb the Ale Trail leaderboard and win prizes. Currently, the app is used more than 70,000 times per month to find Cask Marque accredited pubs.

Chris added: “We’re looking forward to welcoming the Ale Trailers into the pub to scan their certificate and try our ale, as well as continuing to serve great pints to our existing customer base.”

Backed by 46 of the country’s leading brewers and pub companies, the Cask Marque accreditation is only awarded to licensees who can demonstrate they serve their ale to strict standards.

Since its foundation in 1997, Cask Marque has inspected more than 600,000 pints of beer and accredited more than 9,700 of the country’s 60,000 pubs estimated to serve one or more cask conditioned ales.
