Protection for marine life

MARINE life on the north Northumberland coastline will be protected under new proposals.

Following a two-year project, over 100 Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) have been announced including an area from Coquet Island to St Mary’s Island at Whitley Bay, the Aln Estuary and an area that covers the Farne Islands.

The announcement was welcomed by many organisations including the Marine Conservation Society, but the proposals were criticised by the RSPB in the North East, which has concerns over conservation areas for marine birds not being identified until at least 2015.

All of the proposed MCZs will be assessed by an expert panel before the Government makes a final decision.
