Natural England plans to put up a “Welcome to the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve” sign on the salt marsh close to the western end of the causeway.

It does not require planning permission, but needed advertisement consent from Northumberland County Council.

The proposal was amended following initial concerns raised by the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership that it was “not in keeping” with the salt marsh.

As a result, the sign will be put closer to the road and away from the curve so that it blends with the backdrop of the causeway and bridge.Council planning technician Sardar Dara reported: ‘The scale and form of the proposed signs is considered to be appropriate and does not dominate or detract from the site or the visual amenity of the surrounding area.’
