Pupils at St Michael’s CofE First School in Alnwick will have the chance to take part in a special awards scheme when they head back in September.
The school is very proud to be working with Skillsforce to deliver the Junior Prince’s Award or Duke of Cambridge Award, which works in a similar way to the Duke of Edinburgh Award for older children.
The school is going to deliver this for its new Year 5 pupils from September when it becomes a primary school.
The children will carry out activities each week linking to first aid, remembrance, sports leaders, community work and navigation. Many of the activities lead to nationally-recognised qualifications. There is even the chance for a sailing trip included.
Headteacher Gavin Johnston said: “We are delighted to be the only school in the whole of Northumberland to be offering this to our children and really think it will be an amazing opportunity for our children as we move to become a primary school.”
The school has also been awarded the bronze School Games Award, showing its commitment to high-quality PE and sport. So far, it is the only school in Alnwick to achieve this.
