And after declaring the produce was ‘delicious’, the Prime Minister praised the ‘excellent’ scheme.

“I was delighted to sample some of the products made with the Produced in Northumberland seal of approval, and to learn more about this excellent scheme which follows the production process from farm to shelf,” she said.

“By doing so, it lets consumers know that the food and drink they’re buying is locally sourced, ethically produced and of a high quality.

“Having tried it for myself, I can see that it is all these things – and delicious too.”

Produced in Northumberland awards a trademark to producers whose goods are made in the county and also encourages ethical and sustainable production.

County council leader, Coun Peter Jackson, said he was delighted with the Prime Minister’s backing as the scheme goes from strength to strength.

He said: “Since this scheme started, we have been keen to show everybody what Northumberland has to offer.

“Our Northumberland producers create some of the best food and drink in the world and this scheme is designed to showcase their work and talents and give a seal of approval and providence to what they are doing. Having the Prime Minister’s backing is another step forward for Produced in Northumberland, as it continues to gain momentum and benefit people right across our county.”
