A Northumberland fish and chip shop has maintained its place among the UK’s best by once again scooping the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award.

Carlo’s of Alnwick, on Market Street, has secured the highly-regarded accolade, to the delight of staff.

The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry.

The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence.

To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and most importantly the quality of the cooked product.

Carlo’s co-owner Adam Alexander said: “We are extremely proud to receive the 5 Star Fish and Chip Quality Award. We first received this award back in 2011 when we were the first shop in Northumberland to achieve this accolade.

“Year after year the bar is being raised on quality and standards and we feel that we have to work harder to demonstrate that we stand out from the rest. Fish and chips are our national dish and customers demand the very best from their local takeaway.

“They want their fish and chips to be tasty and they want good value for money. Standards are improving in this industry all the time and it is important that we produce a product of the highest standard on a consistent basis in order to maintain customer satisfaction and a good reputation.

“In addition to this award we have also earned a 5 Star Hygiene Award by Northumberland County Council for demonstrating high levels of health and hygiene throughout the business.

“We have also received TripAdvisor’s certificate of excellence for 2013, 2014 and now 2015 and finally the Fast Food Guide’s 5 Star Editor’s Choice Award. Our shop has been handpicked by the editor to receive this award because we have scored five out of five by their visitors consistently for the last four years or more.

“These awards are a testament to all the hard work and effort our tireless staff put in on a daily basis, I cannot praise them enough!”

This award sets the new benchmark for quality within the industry. It will signal to the consumer that they can buy with confidence where the award is displayed and it will encourage more outlets to raise their standards.

NFFF President Gregg Howard said: “The NFFF Fish & Chip Quality Award assessment is extremely comprehensive. Food safety is a key area that we examine together with other key aspects of the business including the preparation and cooking equipment, to the management of paperwork and the traceability of fish.

“Carlo’s clearly takes pride in where it sources its fish and potatoes from. Achieving the NFFF Fish & Chip Quality Award provides reassurance to customers that they are being served cooked food using high-quality ingredients.”

Each Fish and Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and appointed assessors. Carlo’s has proven that it consistently serves of the nation’s finest fish and chips!
